I am all about designing fall 2010 right now. Not physically doing anything, but definitely scheming. I attended the forecasting seminar last week so now I’m even more consumed. I usually have my ideas and inspiration all mapped out before I see the forecasting and this time was no different. When I see the info, it often inspires me to spin what I have planned slightly. Not this time, I am going to stick to my guns. I love what I have planned so far, and I am hoping that it isn’t too expensive or impossible.
Do I divulge my secrets? Why not. I’m not Prada. No one is going to knock off my ideas, are they? Do you want to know what I have planned for fall 2010, even though that’s a year away? What if I change my mind? Too bad for you, I’m the boss! Is half the fun of fashion seeing the collection for the first time each season, and being surprised? Would including the audience in my process of designing a collection work against me? Is fashion so fickle that you would be “over it” before it is even available for sale? I guess I’ll find out.
So- first up on my fall 2010 designing agenda is getting fabric printed. I found a place in the GTA that prints fabric digitally. I emailed them last week and I haven’t heard back yet on the possibility or price. The suspense is killing me. What am I printing, you ask? Well- these hopefully.
My Great Aunt Lily crocheted these granny square afghans. She passed away in April, two months shy of 93. She was a really vibrant lady, who was a master of handiwork. She knitted, crocheted, and embroidered, and she was very, very good at it. The one on the right she gave Dom and I a few years back, and the smaller scale version I was lucky to pick out from her belongings when I was in Manitoba a few weeks ago. I am hoping to scan or photograph them somehow, and print them on a dull silk, or something similar. I don’t know how detailed it could be, but I would love the texture of the afghan to show in the print.
I have a thing for vintage fabric, and the granny square afghan is kind of classicly identifiable as vintage. Digitally printed as an image would be an interesting contradiction between the crafty and the modern. I have visions of the fabric in a simple shift dress with sporty elements.
So we’ll see! If it’s too expensive I probably won’t be able to do it, because I’m not a luxury designer. Unfortunately, sometimes.
Does it make you feel weird to know about it? Is your skin crawling? Should I keep my mouth shut?
I feel so new. I say why not go against the fashion designer grain and be un-characteristically un-territorial.

I am planning to develop a micro-enterprise for a village in Kenya to help the women there. The products will be sold to teams that visit the various communities on short term mission trips. I would love to teach them how to make paper beads but they would need to be good quality. Do you know where I can learn how to do this so I can teach them. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to produce a quality bead worth buying. Thank you!!
